Ascent of the Enshrouded, 2023

This sculpture, which I have titled “Ascent of the Enshrouded,” is a profound visual poem about the enduring quest for freedom. The floating dress, heavy with the concrete that clings to its fabric, symbolizes the oppressive weight of societal constraints and the hardened circumstances that often bind us. Yet, it is not grounded; it is caught in the midst of ascension, a testament to the resilience and inherent yearning for liberation that defines the human spirit.

The ceramic bird, delicate in form yet powerful in its symbolic guidance, represents the transformative journey towards emancipation. It tugs at the garment, a force of nature against the man-made shackles, leading the way to a realm of unburdened existence. This juxtaposition of the bird’s gentle form with its mighty purpose reflects the often understated yet potent nature of hope and the pivotal role it plays in propelling us forward.

“Ascent of the Enshrouded” is an invitation to consider the contrasts between the heaviness of our given roles and the lightness of true freedom. It is a reminder that the path to liberation is often a collaborative effort between our own internal desires and the external forces that inspire us to break free. This piece stands as a metaphor for the social, political, and personal struggles faced by those who find themselves cemented in place by the status quo, yet who are moved by the relentless pursuit of something greater than their current state. Through this work, I seek to inspire a dialogue about the power of tenacious hope

and the courage required to pursue the intangible yet vital essence of freedom. The sculpture is not just an artifact but a moment captured in the continuum of struggle and uplift—a silent ode to the beauty of striving and the grace found in the allies of our aspirations, as embodied by the bird.
