Divided 2021

“Nature’s Silhouette: The Plastic Divide” is a life-sized installation that visualizes the stark contrast between the organic and the synthetic, the natural and the man-made. Emerging from a canvas that bisects the space, a human figure crafted from plastic bags represents the paradoxical relationship humanity has with nature.
On the front, the canvas is pierced by the living plants, which have burst forth from the soil-filled plastic bags on the reverse side. This flourishing greenery moves towards the viewer, encroaching upon the space where the plastic figure is reaching out, symbolizing the persistent force of life amidst human-created barriers. It is a visual metaphor for nature’s resilience and its ability to thrive despite the constraints imposed by human negligence.
Conversely, the back of the canvas reveals the reality of our interference with the natural order. Here, everything is encased in plastic, a testament to the pervasive impact of our consumerist lifestyle on the environment. The human figure on this side, clothed and part of ‘real life,’ stands in stark contrast to its own plastic counterpart, suggesting a disconnection from the very materials we produce.
This installation is an exploration of the duality of existence and the impact of our actions on the world around us. It asks the viewer to consider the place of humanity in the larger ecological context and the legacy we leave behind through our consumption. “Nature’s Silhouette: The Plastic Divide” is a call to consciousness, urging us to recognize our role in both the destruction and potential salvation of our environment.
